Why should we be completing hazard assessments or FLHA’s?
Field Level Hazard Assessment (FLHA) is a systematic process used to identify and evaluate potential hazards associated with specific job tasks within a workplace. The primary goal of an FLHA is to proactively identify and control risks to prevent workplace injuries and ensure a safe working environment.
A FLHA is not a one-time activity; it should be an ongoing process. Regularly reviewing and updating hazard assessments allows organizations to adapt to changes in processes, equipment, or the work environment, without creating an increased risk of hazards. The goal is to foster a culture of continuous improvement in workplace safety.
Step 1. Discuss the tasks to be conducted during the shift.
Step 2. Identify and state the hazards in your work area.
Step 3. Assess the risk level of each task that is conducted.
Step 4. Indicate how hazards are controlled or steps that need to be taken for hazards to be controlled.
Step 5. Re-assess the risk level of each task. The risk should be reduced after controls have been implemented.
Step 6. Update the tasks, hazards, and controls as necessary.
Step 7. Confirm the assessment with signatures of all workers that are involved.
